Top 10 'Green' Machines

While it may not be as affordable or as fuel-efficient as the Cruze or Elantra, the MINI Cooper surely has more fun and looks better having it. And as proof that the nonhybrid gasoline engine keeps getting better, the MINI delivers an energizing ride and 29 mpg city/37 highway with a 6-speed automatic transmission. MINI is leasing 450 fully electric versions of the MINI Cooper, the MINI E, but there's no word on when, if ever, they will hit the market.

Ford Recalls 144,000 F-150s

AutoWeek

By Brad Constant of AutoWeek

Ford is recalling 144,000 F-150 pickups from the 2005 and 2006 model years because of concerns that the airbags may deploy without warning, the automaker said on Tuesday.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration advised Ford to recall the F-150 after investigating 238 reports of accidental airbag deployment. Seventy-seven injuries have been reported, including chipped teeth, minor burns and cuts to the arms, hands and face.

Road vibrations and regular driving can cause the airbag wires to rub against the metal edge of the horn plate. The rubbing may eventually cut through the insulation on the wire, which then may short and cause the airbag to deploy.

Ford is recalling 135,000 trucks in the United States and 9,000 in Canada. However, the risk of accidental airbag deployment is relatively low, Ford said.

Ford changed the wiring for the 2007 model year to avoid the issue.

Real Off-Road Warriors

Price range: $40,030 to $60,405
Toyota offers two capable, large, off-road SUVs, the storied Land Cruiser and the Sequoia. In most of the world, the Land Cruiser would be the hands-down off-road favorite. But in the U.S., Toyota prefers to trade on this famous name by loading it with extras and a profit-making $68,020 base price. We prefer scratching less expensive fenders, hence our selection of the Tundra-based Sequoia. It's also trimmed for an upscale family's daily needs, but it still packs the V8 power, truck-frame beef and standard 4-wheel drive to take eight passengers anywhere.

Toyota Recalls 2.17M Vehicles in US

AutoWeek

By David Phillips of AutoWeek

Toyota Motor Corp. said Thursday it will recall 2.17 million Toyota and Lexus vehicles in the United States to inspect and repair accelerator pedals that may get trapped in floor mats or carpeting.

The automaker said more than half of the recalled vehicles — 1.54 million units — are being added to a giant 2009 recall to inspect and repair accelerator pedals that may get trapped in floor mats.

A 10-month investigation by NASA engineers determined that electronic flaws were not to blame for widespread consumer complaints of unintended acceleration in Toyota and Lexus models, the U.S. Department of Transportation said this month.

Read:  Should You Ignore an Auto Recall?

The Japanese automaker has now recalled 19.2 million Toyota and Lexus vehicles worldwide and more than 13.7 million in the United States to address safety problems since the fall of 2009.

Toyota said 20,000 2006 and early 2007 Lexus GS 300 and GS 350 all-wheel-drive sedans will be recalled to modify the shape of the plastic pad embedded in the driver's side floor carpet.

If the floor carpet around the accelerator pedal is not properly replaced after service, Toyota said there is a possibility that the plastic pad embedded into the floor carpet may interfere with operation of the accelerator pedal.

If this occurs, the accelerator pedal may become temporarily stuck in a partially depressed position rather than returning to the idle position.

Toyota said it had received two complaints about the issue. Owners of the GS 300 and GS 350 vehicles will be notified in early March, Toyota said.

Driver's Floor Carpet Cover
The automaker also is recalling 372,000 2004 through 2006 and early 2007 Lexus RX 330, RX 350, and RX 400h units, and about 397,000 Toyota Highlander and Highlander HV vehicles sold from the 2004 through 2006 model years to replace the driver's side floor carpet cover and its two retention clips.

Toyota said if the forward retention clip used to secure the floor carpet cover — located in front of the center console — is not installed properly, the cover may lean toward the accelerator pedal and interfere with the accelerator pedal arm.

If this occurs, Toyota said the accelerator pedal may become temporarily stuck in a partially depressed position rather than returning to the idle position.

Read:  Driver Error in Most Toyota Crashes

RX and Highlander owners will be notified soon how to inspect the condition or how to contact a dealer to perform the inspection. Toyota said owners will receive a second notification once the replacement covers are available.

Expanded Recall
Toyota also is expanding a recall announced in November 2009 to address possible floor mat entrapment of the accelerator pedal.

The affected 1.5 million vehicles include about 603,000 Toyota 4Runner SUVs sold from the 2003 through 2009 model years; about 17,000 Lexus LX 570 SUVS sold from the 2008 through 2011 models years; and about 761,000 Toyota RAV4 vehicles sold from the 2006 through 2010 models years.

Toyota said owners of the 4Runner, LX 570, and RAV4 vehicles will be notified soon, and receive a second notification once the recall preparations are complete.

Toyota and Lexus dealers will perform the recalls at no charge, Toyota said.

MINI Rocketman Blasts Off

AutoWeek

By Greg Kable of AutoWeek

MINI Rocketman (© MINI)Click to enlarge picture

The MINI Rocketman concept hints at the British brand's small-car history, but it is likely a future production model.

MINI is returning to its roots with an ultracompact concept called the Rocketman that's set to be revealed at the Geneva Motor Show ahead of likely future production.

The pint-sized car has been conceived as a modern interpretation of the original Alec Issigonis-inspired model that revolutionized small-car design when it was introduced in 1959. Smaller than today's entry-level hardtop, the concept is clear recognition that MINI is considering a less expensive, urban-based model to compete with the smart fortwo and the Scion iQ.

While stopping short of confirming that the Rocketman will be developed into a showroom model, MINI is keen to point out that every concept it has created since the brand was relaunched by BMW in 2001 has progressed into production.

Read:  Top 10 Pure City Cars

Styled in-house by the same team responsible for the recent Beachcomber and Paceman concepts, the Rocketman eschews the contemporary one-box styling of perceived urban-based small-car rivals such as the smart fortwo for a more traditional two-box profile that provides it with unmistakable visual ties to the rest of the MINI lineup.

The new concept also has a fresh take on a whole raft of classic MINI design cues, many of which are will be on the next hardtop due in 2013. Plus the Rocketman gets tauter surfacing treatment than any existing MINI model. The result is a thoroughly modern-looking small car whose design is neither conspicuously retro nor appears to be forced.

The car is fronted by a hexagonal-shaped grille, oval headlamps with the latest LED technology, an upright windscreen heavily tapered at the outer edges, a high waistline and large wheelhouses accommodating 18-inch wheels shod with narrow, low-rolling-resistance tires from Continental.

Bing: MINI Rocketman

The design team also fit the concept with a reinterpretation of the original MINI's so-called floating roof. The glass structure is arranged in sections fitted with with optical fibers to re-create the look of the Union Jack. When not illuminated in the colors of the British flag, the various sections glow a neutral white.

Curiously for a MINI, there is a distinct lack of chrome adorning the Rocketman's exterior. Instead, it receives carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic highlights, most prominently within the front fenders and wheel arches, to further enforce its contemporary construction.

To ease entry into the cabin, MINI's designers used deep, double-hinged frameless doors. They pivot outwards in a two-stage process that provides a larger opening angle than a conventional single-hinged door when space is at a premium. The lower edge of the doors also incorporate the sill element, something made possible by the concept's carbon-fiber spaceframe design but likely to be ruled out on costs grounds for any eventual production version of the new car.

View Slideshow:  Small Car, Big History

An equal amount of attention was paid to the luggage-carrying properties of the MINI, which receives a innovative two-piece tailgate. The upper part, fashioned from glass, hinges centrally from within the roof, opening high to provide easy access to the trunk. By contrast, the lower part slides out from the bodywork in the form of a drawer that also doubles as a luggage carrier.

The Rocketman is shorter, wider and lower than the hardtop.

MINI hasn't officially confirmed what engine it plans for a possible production version. But it's no secret that BMW is well advanced on a new range of turbocharged three-cylinder common-rail diesel and direct-injection gasoline units. Code-named N37 and N38, they share the same architecture of the German carmaker's inline four- and six-cylinder diesel and gasoline engines.

MINI Cooper Reviews

Another question mark hangs over exactly what platform MINI is looking toward to base its new entry-level model. While BMW is developing a new front-wheel-drive structure to underpin the next-generation hardtop, MINI officials suggest it will be too big to provide a suitable platform for a car of such compact dimensions as the Rocketman. One possible scenario put to AutoWeek during a exclusive preview of the new concept is the development of a smaller structure with PSA (Peugeot-Citroën), with which BMW collaborates in the area of four-cylinder diesel and gasoline engines.

Robot Cars

General Motor's EN-V Robotic Concept Vehicle (© General Motors)Click to enlarge picture

GM's EN-V robotic concept vehicles rely on communication with other vehicles to drive themselves safely.

Google's landmark deployment of autonomous cars — vehicles that can drive themselves — onto public roads and into live human traffic last summer and early fall was announced casually, and after the fact.

Astonishingly, the search-engine giant was able to set loose seven Toyota Prius hybrids, all adorned with a dizzying array of odd-looking sensors, onto Highway 1 between San Francisco and Los Angeles for several months without raising suspicion. Each vehicle was piloted by artificial-intelligence software designed to interpret the data collected by the sensors and use it to mimic the decisions made by a human driver. The goal: to fundamentally change the way we use cars.

How so, you ask? Google believes that the use of autonomous vehicles could nearly halve the number of automobile-related deaths — which it estimates at 1.2 million worldwide per year — because computers are theoretically more precise drivers than humans. In addition, the instant reaction time and 360-degree awareness of computer-controlled vehicles would allow them to ride closer together on the highway than vehicles driven by humans, thus reducing traffic congestion. And finally, they can be more fastidious with the accelerator, reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions considerably.

Essentially, riding in an autonomous car could shave time off your daily commute, reduce your carbon footprint, save you money and save lives in the long run. And you don't even have to lift a finger. Instead of driving, you're a passenger — working, watching television, conversing with friends. Sounds idyllic.

Does this mean that self-directed robot cars, the kind that science-fiction writers have been dreaming about for decades, will hit the streets within a couple of years? No.

While the Google project may be one of the most high-profile demonstrations of autonomous-vehicle research, and one of the most successful to date, the path to a production robotic car still remains uncertain and would require clearing a staggering number of technical and legal hurdles. But plenty of people, in both the academic world and in the research-and-development divisions of carmakers such as GM and Volvo, are working out the kinks.

Bing Images: Driverless Cars

Safety in Numbers: Networked Autonomy
The basic recipe for the robotic car was developed through trial and error nearly a decade ago: Radar detects objects at long range; laser range finders (also called laser radar, or lidar) sift through those and other objects as they get closer; vision cameras look for specific types of objects; and a bank of computers collates all of these data and tells the fully electronic, drive-by-wire vehicle where to go.

But so far no one has ever been able to create a vehicle that can handle the vagaries of everyday life on the streets.

Even the most headline-grabbing accomplishments of robotic cars, such as Stanford University's driverless Audi TTS, which recently climbed Pikes Peak, were highly controlled, precisely plotted experiments, with little bearing on the chaos of real-world driving. How do robots respond to a blizzard, to drivers who won't yield or to something as routine as a detour? Being able to recognize, read and process a blinking detour sign, for example, is a feat of artificial intelligence that's still pure science fiction.

One interim solution is to limit the burden of autonomy by programming robots to follow a human leader. The goal of the European-based Sartre project (Safe Road Trains for the Environment) is to create road trains, harnessing existing driver-assistance features to establish a convoy of robots behind a human-controlled truck. Unlike most autonomous vehicles, which bristle with mounted sensors, these are production-model Volvos that use factory-standard sensors, vision processing and electric-motor-assisted steering and braking to stay in position.

"We're trying to stretch the existing technology as far as it can go," says Erik Coelingh, technology leader for active safety at Volvo. Avoiding some of the more expensive standbys of autonomous vehicles, such as the ubiquitous laser range finders bolted onto most robot-car roofs, means working with lower-quality data. So the only aftermarket add-on that Sartre vehicles use is a wireless communication system that keeps the cars in contact with each other and coordinates vehicles entering or leaving the convoy. Sartre has been tested at low speeds, with one lead vehicle and one follower, but Coelingh plans to test a full convoy this year, eventually reaching speeds of 55 mph.

General Motors is also developing networked autonomy with its collection of concept vehicles, called the Electric Networked Vehicle, or EN-V. In theory, the podlike EN-Vs would access a citywide or areawide network and coordinate their movements as kind of cooperative robotic fleet.

GM has conducted autonomous-ride events, most recently at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January. But as EN-V project director Chris Borroni-Bird points out, there's a difference between weaving around an enclosed space and navigating city streets: "The network has to be completely stable. No dropouts, no GPS loss of signal and no wireless loss of signal. It's one thing when your cell phone loses its signal. It's another if the vehicle is driving autonomously and suddenly doesn't know where it is."

BMW ‘i' Aims for 2013 Launch

AutoWeek

By Greg Kable of AutoWeek

BMW has confirmed that the new subbrand through which it intends to market a range of advanced stand-alone hybrid, range-extended and plug-in electric models will be called BMW “i.”

Created to develop, produce and market what BMW's head of marketing, Ian Robertson, describes as “innovative solutions to premium mobility,” the brand will be supported by a company established by BMW called i Ventures, through which the German carmaker plans to grow its range of mobility services.

The i3 and the i8 will be the initial models and are planned for introduction in 2013.

Read:  Electric BMW 1-Series ActiveE Revealed

“These cars have been designed specifically for their respective alternative drive systems,” said Klaus Draeger, head of BMW's R&D operations. “We're using an innovative architecture to cancel out practically all the extra weight of the batteries.”

The new architecture, which goes under the name LifeDrive, uses an aluminum chassis to house the driveline, with the passenger cell constructed from carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic developed in partnership with U.S.-based SG carbon.

The 2+2 i3, previously known under its internal working title MegaCity Vehicle, is BMW's first production model to be conceived specifically for an urban driving environment. Designed with practicality in mind, it boasts an upright one-box silhouette.

Expected to be offered on a leasing deal similar to that used for the limited-volume MINI E, the first version of the i3 will be powered by an all-electric driveline similar to that found in the 1-Series ActiveE, which uses a 170-hp electric motor in combination with a lithium-ion battery pack for a claimed range of 150 miles. Other versions of the i3, including a range extender, also are under development but have yet to receive a definitive production go-ahead, according to AutoWeek's high-ranking BMW sources.

Read:  BMW EfficientDynamics

The i8, previewed by the EfficientDynamics concept car first shown in 2009, will use a hybrid driveline likely to combine BMW's upcoming 1.5-liter, three-cylinder engine, known internally as a the N38, with the same electric motor used by the i3.

Like the i3, the i8 will be produced on a dedicated line at BMW's Leipzig factory. The company has announced investment plans of $550 million for the factory, which currently produces the 1-Series, the 3-Series and the X1. BMW claims valuable synergies will be created through the sharing of components between the i3 and the i8, including electric motors, power electronics and lithium-ion batteries.

I Ventures has taken a stake in New York-based My City Way, which provides users — by way of a mobile app — information on public transportation, parking availability and local entertainment for more than 40 North American cities. Another 40 cities will be part of the global rollout, including BMW's base of Munich, Germany.

GM Unveils Infotainment System

AutoWeek

By David Sedgwick of AutoWeek

General Motors' MyLink (© General Motors)Click to enlarge picture

General Motors' MyLink system, which links smartphones to the car, lauches on the Chevrolet Volt and Equinox later in 2011.

General Motors is introducing a competitor to Ford's Sync infotainment system that will provide text messaging, e-mails, traffic advisories and other connected-car functions.

The system, called Chevrolet MyLink, will let motorists link their smart phone and its functions — such as texting, calls, music or navigation — to the vehicle's voice recognition software, sound system and navigation screen.

MyLink will be launched in the Chevrolet Volt and Equinox this fall. Later, GM will offer it in the rest of Chevy's models, as well as Buick, Cadillac and GMC. The automaker did not provide a timetable for the rollout.

Chevrolet MyLink lets motorists choose new applications online and continuously update software.

More important, it provides the applications safely, said Micky Bly, GM's executive director of global electrical systems, hybrids, EVs and batteries.

Read:  Are Our Cars Making Us Lazy?

By using spoken commands, motorists can use MyLink without taking their hands off the wheel or their eyes off the road, Bly said in an interview. Most automakers "are trying to make sure that they display things in a safe, secure manner," he said. "We don't want to step across the line" and distract motorists.

MyLink could represent GM's first real competitor to Sync, a system that's available on all Ford and Lincoln vehicles sold at retail and has lifted Ford's reputation as a technology leader.

The basic Sync technology allows people to control cell phones and portable music players by voice. Since Sync's debut on the Focus in 2007, Ford has enhanced the system several times, adding services such as emergency 911 assistance and vehicle health reports.

Ford has installed more than 3 million Sync units. Sync comes standard on Lincoln vehicles, and the automaker says about 80 percent of people buying 2011 Ford models opt for the $395 system.

Sync and other similar devices are drawing more scrutiny from U.S. regulators who are studying the impact of driver distraction on highway fatalities and injuries. U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood recently held meetings with GM, Ford and Chrysler officials on the matter.

OnStar Still Offered

GM will continue to offer its OnStar service with Chevrolet MyLink. OnStar, which offers 24-hour roadside service, route guidance, emergency assistance and other features, will be positioned as a package of safety services.

Chevrolet owners will get a basic mix of telematics services when they buy their vehicles. Then they will go online to add apps and update their systems.

The first wave of apps will include Pandora, an online music source, plus Stitcher, an app that lets users create customized radio stations to play their favorite podcasts.

Read:  Driving-In Theater

Motorists without smart phones would be able to place calls, respond to text messages and use turn-by-turn navigation using OnStar. But a smart phone is needed for access to Pandora, Stitcher and other apps.

QNX, a division of BlackBerry producer Research in Motion Ltd., provides the software operating system for MyLink. Nuance, based in Burlington, Mass., provides the voice recognition software.

QNX is a longtime GM partner in telematics. Its software customers include Audi, Acura, Ford, GM, Hyundai and Saab.

Nuance has developed a leading voice recognition technology dubbed Dragon Dictation. GM will use OnStar's hardware to integrate Dragon Dictation into the cockpit.

Bly said GM would review all software applications to make sure they meet the automaker's safety standards, and to ensure that the software is bug-free.

"We're going to keep [all applications] in a 'walled garden,'" Bly said. "We know our software will be virus-free."

Leslie J. Allen contributed to this report.

2012 Honda Civic Gets Bigger Engine

AutoWeek

By Dale Jewett of AutoWeek

Honda is dropping a larger, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine into the Si versions of the redesigned Civic coupe and sedan, which go on sale this spring. The Civic Si powertrain also gets a new six-speed manual transmission.

Honda on Thursday said it anticipates that the 2.4-liter engine will be rated at 200 hp. That's up slightly from the 197-hp rating of the 2.0-liter engine used in the 2011 Civic Si. But the new engine delivers a big jump in torque — to 170 lb-ft, compared with 139 lb-ft in the 2010 model.

View Pictures:  New Honda Civic

Even with the power boost, Honda says it expects the highway fuel-economy rating of the Civic Si to rise 2 mpg, to 31 mpg.

Honda released several details and photos of the 2012 Civic lineup on Thursday, after previewing the restyling with concept cars at the Detroit Auto Show in January.

Some details:

Coupe and sedan body styles and hybrid and natural-gas versions of the Civic continue. An HF trim joins the lineup for 2012. Honda aims for the Civic HF to get 41 mpg on the highway with a 140-hp, 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine and a five-speed automatic transmission. All Civics except the Si get Honda's ECO Assist technology, which varies the color in the speedometer from green to blue, depending on how aggressively the driver is using the powertrain. The Civic hybrid uses a 110-hp, 1.5-liter gasoline engine and a continuously variable transmission, similar to the setup in the CR-Z hybrid. The Civic hybrid uses a lithium-ion battery pack.

Hardcore Haulers

Road & Track

By Nick Kurczewski of Road & Track

Indulgence isn't always a bad thing, so long as you can live with the results. When it comes to performance-oriented sport-utility vehicles, this usually means a steep sticker price and high fuel costs. Yet these tire-smoking vehicles are much more than rolling ego machines. Expert engineering and some outrageous power outputs help guarantee that the SUVs in this list aren't stumbling over themselves when the road gets twisty or the traffic light turns green. And with the rear seats folded flat, they offer loads of cargo room and real-world functionality — but be careful not to scuff those leather seats.

So, here are our favorite sport-themed haulers. Warning: They're not for the faint of heart — or the light of wallet — but they're guaranteed to leave a big impression.

Why not start with the bargain of the group? The 2011 Infiniti FX50 has the horsepower to match the competition, and a price that is tens of thousands less than most of the vehicles in this list. You might find it hard to believe that a sport-utility costing $57,825 can be considered a bargain. Yet the FX50 has some of the sportiest looks while boasting enough oomph to satisfy all but the most power-hungry amongst us. Standard all-wheel-drive and a 390-bhp 5.0-liter V-8 engine provide this heady mix of performance. A curvaceous exterior also lends an elegant and sporty tone to the proceedings. Most important, the FX50's double-wishbone front and multilink rear suspension, optional Continuous Damping Control and Rear Active Steer make sure this crossover has the moves (not just the style) of a fun-to-drive performance machine. The firm ride is tuned to favor curvy roads and smooth asphalt, so don't expect to run the Rubicon Trail. When you press the gas pedal, however, you'll leave most sports sedans in your wake.

There were plenty of naysayers when the original Porsche Cayenne arrived in 2003. What was a company renowned for building some of the best sports cars in the world doing in the SUV market? The answer was simple: It was building one of the world's fastest and most agile sport-utilities. If you're a brand purist, you might insist on licking your wounds at the thought of this "911 on stilts." But as anyone lucky enough to get behind the wheel of the range-topping Cayenne Turbo knows, this is one addictively rapid ride. You'll be able to impress four lucky passengers as the 500-bhp 4.8-liter turbocharged V-8 engine and 8-speed automatic make short work out of any trip. No, the fuel economy is not what we'd call a bragging point. In this heady company, though, an EPA-estimated 22 mpg highway average starts to look almost frugal. Our biggest complaint about the Cayenne Turbo is the $105,775 sticker price — it's thousands more than the other vehicles here.

The BMW X5 has always been one of our favorite sport-utilities when it comes to its blend of style and driving enjoyment. It's not easy making a big and boxy vehicle look refined, but we think the X5 handily manages the task. Incredibly, the X5 M's starting price of $86,575 makes it the second least-expensive vehicle in our list. Under the hood of the BMW is a twin-turbocharged 555-bhp V-8 engine, mated to an 6-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel-drive system. The standard 20-in. wheels dig into the asphalt and serve up a dash to 60 mph in only 4.5 seconds — this figure is better than that of many of BMW's own high-performance sedans! Like the other vehicles in this list, the BMW has lots of cargo room, its 21.9 cu. ft. ample for almost all occasions. But if needed, the rear seats fold flat, providing a whopping 61.8 cu. ft. of space. Not that you'd want to risk scuffing the X5's handsome leather-clad interior by stuffing in your grandmother's collection of antique ottomans, but it's nice to know you could if you had to.

Mercedes-Benz was one of the first automakers to recognize the huge demand for luxury and performance in the sport-utility market. The original M-Class appeared in 1998 and 2011 brings with it another round of technical and visual improvements. While there are larger (and smaller) SUVs in the Mercedes lineup, the M-Class strikes the perfect balance for space and pace, especially when it comes to the menacing ML63 AMG. From the moment you twist the key and hear the deep grumble of its 6.2-liter V-8 engine, there is no doubt that the sole intent of this vehicle is to go very, very fast. With 503 bhp and 465 lb.-ft. of torque — and the grip provided by all-wheel drive — the ML63 AMG launches itself from 0 to 60 in less than 5.0 seconds. A 7-speed automatic with shift paddles on the steering wheel is the only transmission available. In this AMG model, the brakes and suspension are beefed up to cope with the extra power — remember, this ML63 has 235 more horsepower than the base ML. This also explains the premium you'll pay at the dealership and fuel pump when opting for the ML63 AMG. The price starts at $93,465, you'll be lucky to better 15 mpg on the highway.

Like a handcrafted Savile Row suit, there is something intrinsically and forever classy about the Range Rover SC. Let's be honest, some of the other high-performance sport-utilities in this list can push the wrong buttons for some folks, especially when it comes to their flashy design and look-at-me image. We're not naming names, but the Range Rover isn't one of them. Sitting at the top of the range is the supercharged SC model, which offers 510-bhp courtesy of a supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 engine. The classic (i.e. boxy) lines of the Range Rover mean translates to ample space in the back, with 35.1 cu. ft. of cargo room behind the rear seats. An 18 mpg average on the highway is, shall we say, a bit less impressive — although the figure is mid-pack in this thirsty company. What sets the Range Rover apart is its true go-anywhere capability. This British luxury brand has been piecing together rugged SUVs for decades. A low-range gearbox and air suspension give the Range Rover amazing off-road credibility and the hardware to tackle almost any obstacle. You'll be on your own, however, when it comes to navigating the $95,465 base price of the SC model.

2011 Infiniti IPL G37 — First Drive

2011 Infiniti IPL G Coupe (© Nissan North America)Click to enlarge picture

The 2011 Infiniti IPL G37 coupe is the first model in the Infiniti Performance Line. A combination of performance and luxury, it boasts tweaks to the engine and suspension and a fully loaded interior.

BMW has M, Mercedes has AMG, Lexus has its F series and Nissan has Nismo. These performance-oriented subbrands set enthusiasts' hearts aflutter with expectations of increased power and improved handling. Until now, Infiniti has gone without a performance arm, even though cars such as the G sedan and coupe and M sedan are plenty sporty. Recently, Nissan's luxury brand announced that it, too, would offer a performance line: the Infiniti Performance Line, or IPL, to be exact. Its first creation is the IPL G37 coupe. Although it's packed with features as well as performance, the IPL coupe isn't as hot as a BMW M3 or Mercedes C63 AMG, but it's tons of fun nonetheless and costs less than its German competitors.

Bing Images: Infiniti IPL G37 Coupe

Model Lineup
The 2011 Infiniti IPL G37 coupe is priced at $47,950 for a trim with the manual transmission and $49,850 for an automatic. It is equipped like a G37 Journey with Nissan's Premium, Sport and Navigation packages. Standard equipment includes leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, 8-way power-adjustable front sport seats, keyless entry and starting, Bose audio system with 9.3-gigbyte Music Box hard drive, XM satellite radio, USB port, automatic bi-xenon headlights, sunroof, navigation system, rearview camera, Bluetooth cell phone connectivity, universal garage door opener, limited-slip differential, performance brakes, fog lights and P225/45R19 front and P245/40R19 rear summer tires on unique alloy wheels.

Over and above the Sport package features, the IPL comes with a sportier suspension, red accent stitching on the upholstery and steering wheel, and an aerodynamics package that consists of more aggressive front and rear spoilers and sculpted side sills.

Safety equipment includes dual front airbags, front side airbags, curtain side airbags, tire-pressure monitor, active front head restraints, anti-lock brakes with brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution, traction control and electronic stability control.

Under the Hood
The 2011 Infiniti IPL G37 coupe uses a tuned version of Infiniti's 3.7-liter V6 engine. In the G37 coupe, it makes 330 horsepower and 272 lb-ft of torque. Thanks to a larger dual exhaust and more aggressive computer controls, the engine produces 348 horses and 276 lb-ft of torque in the IPL coupe.

The IPL coupe is offered with a 6-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed automatic with manual shift capability. The automatic also has Adaptive Shift Control, which adjusts shift points based on the driver's driving style. EPA fuel-economy ratings are 19 mpg city/27 mpg highway with the automatic and 17/25 with the manual.

Inner Space
There are few differences between the interior of the IPL G37 coupe and that of the standard G37. The most notable are the red accent stitching on the seats and steering wheel, the available Monaco Red upholstery and the aluminum pedals, which you get with the Sport package anyway.

The interior ambience is sporty, with a quality feel. The leather-wrapped steering wheel feels good, and the leather upholstery has an upscale look and feel. Attractive Silk-Obi aluminum trim complements the dashboard's quality soft-touch materials. All of the controls move with precision, and they are placed in a simple, easy-to-reach layout on the center stack. The environment isn't quite as luxurious as a Lexus IS, but the look fits the price.

The front bucket seats fit the car's sporty character. The driver's seat is supportive, and has enough bolstering to keep drivers planted during aggressive driving. Multiple seat adjustments team with the standard power tilt/telescoping steering wheel to make just about any driver comfortable. Very tall drivers will have an issue with headroom, though.

The back seat is rather inhospitable, lacking headroom and legroom. The front seats power forward to allow access, but a few acrobatic moves are required to get back there. The lack of space is disappointing, because the back seat was far more accommodating in the first-generation G35 coupe.

The trunk is also rather small, at 7.4 cubic feet. That's about what you would expect in a convertible, not a coupe. It's shallow, too, but the rear seat folds down to allow some longer items to fit.

Auto Icons: Then & Now

Mini 1.3i (© BMW AG)

Mini 1.3i

There are three constants in the car world: change, change and change. New models are introduced every year, and nameplates disappear often enough to confuse even the most dedicated gearhead. In spite of this, there are long-termers — iconic badges that stick around for decades. The ones that last do so for a number of reasons, but most are simply the result of a good idea. These are some of the cars that were popular then and remain so today.

The original SUV
Seventy-five years ago, the Chevrolet Suburban was a truck chassis gifted with an elongated passenger cab, a live rear axle and more interior space than a typical New York apartment. In 2011, the blueprint remains. A few things have changed — today's Suburban rides like a luxury car and gets just over 20 mpg on the highway, for example — but Chevy has improved, not diluted, the original idea. If you need an all-hauling, people-moving tribute to American persistence, this is your ride.

Italy's air-cooled darling
Not a lot has changed here. The first Fiat 500, introduced in 1957, was an inexpensive air-cooled midget that helped put cash-strapped Europeans on stylish wheels. The latest 500, launched in 2007, is water-cooled, but the basics — a distinctly Italian silhouette, a postage-stamp wheelbase and seating for four — remain. Cute doesn't always age well, but the 500's lines are the Gary Coleman of the car industry: forever young and perpetually, almost freakishly, adorable.

The best-selling truck in America
Before the Ford F-Series launched in the late 1940s, pickup trucks were largely based on cars. The first F truck, the 1948 F-1, looked nothing like a car, but it offered a docile personality paired with industrial-strength utility. The F-150 badge didn't arrive until 1973, but every modern Ford truck, regardless of name, is evolved from the F-1. The current F-Series trucks are available with airbags, turbochargers and even a capable V6 engine, but they're still what they were 60 years ago: good, honest pickups.

Style, style, style
In real estate, location is paramount. With cars, it's looks. The 1964 Mustang was little more than a rebodied Ford Falcon sedan, but taut sheet metal and a sexy stance ensured that it became one of the Blue Oval's best-selling models. Like the original, the 2011 Mustang carries either 6- or 8-cylinder power under its long, masculine hood, in addition to a live rear axle. Fuel economy — 30 mpg from the standard 305-horsepower V6 — however, is worlds better.

A tasty helping of bread and butter
How's this for ambitious: Honda says that the Accord, which began life as a 2-door hatchback, was so named because it represented the company's attempt to achieve harmony between society and cars. The big H's legendary midsizer was introduced in 1976. It cost just $3,995, produced a whopping 68 horsepower and cranked out 44 mpg on the highway. Today's Accord is much larger, faster and more comfortable, but the philosophy — a do-everything car for Joe Everyman — thankfully stuck around.

The Best New 2011 Diesel Cars

Not long ago the word "diesel" was synonymous with loud, smelly, and unreliable vehicles in the United States. In fact, over the last several decades diesels had all but disappeared as an option for American passenger cars — becoming relegated to the lives of work trucks and heavy-duty pickups.

Throw in a recent fuel price crisis, mix it with a dramatic shift in regulatory policy, and today Americans are being reintroduced to diesels at an increasing pace — but these aren't your grandpa's diesels.

It's not as easy as you might like to determine if clean diesels will save you money in the long run, but you can be sure they will be solidly engineered, fun to drive, reliable, produce low emissions, and last you some time to come. Continue reading for a look at some of the best new diesel cars on the market, from most to least fuel efficient.

Notes: Fuel economy, annual fuel cost estimates and carbon emissions estimates reflect automatic transmission models and are reported as listed on fueleconomy.gov. Prices are also from automatic transmission models and reflect the lowest MSRP. Of course, equipment and option choices will be the final determining factor in price differential between the various gasoline and diesel counterparts; base prices may not reflect comparable options.

2011 Nissan Versa — Flash Drive

The Nissan Versa proves that it is more fun to drive a slow car quickly than it is to drive a fast car slowly. I've driven the Nissan GT-R and the Nissan 370Z, but the Versa is more fun than both of them. It can easily handle 70 mph on a freeway where appropriate, but the engine will be well into its power band and a little noisy. It's great fun. The interior has lots of headroom in the front and in the back, with comfy seats and nice materials. The trunk is surprisingly spacious. So much interior room in a small car is bound to result in an awkward look, and as expected the Versa is somewhat ugly. If you can get past the appearance, the Versa is a fun choice and one of the best Nissans on sale today. –Paul Hagger

While Nissan's Versa isn't going to win any beauty contests, it's a great car that drives well and will give you 30 mpg or more on the everyday commute. The compact and efficient 5-door hatchback has decent power, and the continuously variable transmission works well. Though the change to a CVT takes some getting used to, it's very efficient. Still, there is something disconcerting under hard acceleration when the engine is set at high rpm and the car's speed is increasing. The Versa's style is driven by functionality so it's not a superattractive vehicle. But the functionality and efficiency come through in spades. –Mike Meredith

Considering that the Versa is the most basic model in the Nissan lineup, the small car is pretty impressive. There's not a lot of power under the hood, but Nissan's very good CVT helps harness what power there is. I wouldn't call the Versa quick, but it does get around OK. For such a small car, there's a surprising amount of room inside. The tall roof provides a roomy feel, and there's plenty of headroom for a taller driver. Cargo space is quite usable, but although rear seats fold to expand the space, they don't go flat to the cargo floor, limiting their use. With fuel economy in the low 30s and priced around $15K for a well-equipped model, the Versa makes a good option in the entry-level sedan market. –Perry Stern

Bentley Continental GT turned into ASI Tetsu GTR

Tetsu GTRWe love the most tuning jobs because they add power and help to increase the aggressive look of the car. However, when it comes to this Bentley Continental GT have we say that we are less satisfied.

This Continental GT was used create to this Tetsu GTR. Japanese tuner ASI decided that he needed some sprucing gave it a new rear and front bumper, trunk and spoilers, exposed carbon fibre bonnet and a custom paint job that is drawn with flowers! I think we all agree that the flowers must be removed.

It seems some method to the Tetsu inspired madness as the front turn signals GTR's of the Porsche 911 and rear has an unmistakable Audi R8 flavor. The car was a faster issue with unspecified mechanical components that boost Twin Turbo W12 updated driving up to 800 PS that just makes way for those confused stares into the public.

Acura RSX Turbo Build by EDO Performance

DSC_7885

HUNTINGTON BEACH, California (Febuary 14, 2011) – EDO Performance recently took on a special Acura RSX turbo build.  We were initially contact by an RSX enthusiast who wanted a Full Race turbo.  The RSX was completely stock and non-turbo, to be built from the ground up.  We discussed a power package starting with a stage 2 turbo kit from Full Race Motorsports.  As with any turbo build there are several factors to consider: can the engine handle the power of the turbo, how will a certain exhaust work with a turbo setup, do I have enough power to juice my ride?

We arranged for the RSX to be dropped off at EDO Performance once all the necessary parts for the build arrived.  For a non-turbo engine to become a turbo engine, we first had to prep and build the engine from high compression to low compression.  After the engine was ready we installed a Full Race stage 2 “K Series Turbo Kit” with the Garrett GT3076R. For those who don’t know the Garrett GT3076R, it takes a lot of custom work to get it fitted properly. The M7 Super Power Flow Filter was installed to protect the Garrett turbo from air particulates.  The Full Race Vacuum/Boost Block was installed to distribute between the fuel pressure regulator, boost gauge, waste gate, blow off valve, and boost controller.  We also rerouted the oil lines and power steering lines.

An Acura TSX 6th gear was added to the transmission.  A Quaife LSD was installed to hand the power distribution to the wheels. The Thermal Turbo cat back exhaust was custom fabricated in-house with a 3 inch section to fit the Full Race downpipe.  The rear bumper was cut to perfectly fit the exhaust. We customized a bracket and utilized the Walbro high performance fuel pump, which can support up to 500hp (at the crank).  To power the RSX a lightweight performance TR Battery with the TR Battery adjustable tie down was installed.

The M7 Super Cooling Oil Catch Tank was installed to collect oil, moisture, blow-by gas and also to work with the custom breather.  Using the M7 oil catch tank will prevent carbon and sludge build-up in the intake system and engine.  To handle the higher horsepower we used M7 Super Gear Oil 75W90 in the transmission and M7 Super Street GT Engine Oil 10W40 in the engine.  AutoMeter gauges were installed to meter the boost and oil pressure.

Here at EDO Performance we built this RSX the ground up, from completely stock to almost track ready.  We knew there was a long road ahead of us and our client had high expectations of what was proposed.  Pulling a modest 363hp (at the wheels) we have another satisfied performance vehicle enthusiast at EDO Performance!

Details about NISMO's new club sports package for Nissan R35 GT-R

Nissan R35 GT-RNISMO has released the details we waited about any upgrades you have done the R35 GT-r Nissan. The parts that were used were the usual OEM installation and quality, that we come to expect and that help focusing on weight reduction and stricter handling.

The Club Sport tuning package contains the chassis Pack of race tuned Bilstein Damptronic adjustable dampers encapsulated in 18.5 kg / mm (front) and 9.6 kg / mm (rear) sources formed. The combination of rock-hard coils and adjustable damping at both low and high speeds should be inflexible and more stable the GT-R in the corners during the bombardment from a fast sweeper.

Is's handling is a set of rays forged aluminum wheels, sized 20 x 9.5-inch front (+ 45 mm offset) and 20 × 10.5-inch (+ 25 mm offset) in the rear and wrapped in Bridgestone RE070R run-flats, size 225 / 40 and 285 / 35, front and rear.

The rest of the items focus on weight reduction, starting with a light axle back exhaust, the 11 pounds of the GT-R's curb weight, along with a carbon fiber Fiberglas falls the air turbulence and parasitic drag reduced. Updated graphite secured and leather-trimmed seats nixes of electronic control, reducing other 13 pounds total weight are also part of the package that keeps the side airbags but. Of course some NISMO emblems of upgrades rounds.

Unfortunately the parts are available only in Japan as a package and only install 12 NISMO authorized transactions and come in at over $50,000. 2011 Lincoln MKS — Flash Drive

The new Lincoln MKS is a sharp-looking luxury sedan. From the bold grille to the elegant lines, you can tell this is a special vehicle. The overall look and feel of the interior is impressive, too. However, I did not like the appearance of the dials on the central dashboard and the smallish controls on main console. There was a feeling that engineers were raiding the Ford parts bin and then slightly upgrading and redesigning for Lincoln. Driving the car was bliss, however. The EcoBoost engine was smooth and provided ample power. Lastly, while the body remained solid, the doors didn't feel solid when being shut. For $50K, Lincoln needs to nail the small things in order to compete with the other luxury brands. –Joe Chulick

Wow! The Lincoln MKS is a revelation. It's a pleasant surprise and worthy of comparison with the best luxury cars in the world, including Lexus. The interior is luxurious and modern, with a great style and distinctive appearance — I love it! But the interior is also where I find the only weak part in a very strong overall package: The MKS has a high waistline, and the seats that are a little overpadded for my tastes. I had to raise the seat high to find a seating position I liked, but there was still plenty of headroom. Dynamically the MKS is also impressive. It's quiet while cruising at speed but can quickly exploit any gaps in traffic. Despite its size and weight, the MKS is even good on twisty back roads. I've never considered myself a potential Lincoln buyer before, but MKS is starting to change my mind. –Paul Hagger

The addition of Ford's new EcoBoost twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 engine moves Lincoln's flagship MKS into sport-sedan territory. And though it's a big car, the MKS is smooth and well-controlled, with the overall feel of a fine sport sedan. The EcoBoost engine delivers lots of power over a broad rpm range. Overall, the MKS feels balanced and is really nice to drive. The 6-speed automatic has a manual-shift mode, but the driver is not able to downshift without first moving the gearshift lever to the manual position. The interior is Ford to some degree — nice but not too impressive. It's been very nicely trimmed and refined to a luxury-car level with a combination of patterned metallic trim, satin metallic trim and chrome. And the heated and cooled leather seats are comfortable and supportive without being too aggressive. –Mike Meredith

2011 Mazda MX-5 Miata — Flash Drive

I applaud the Mazda MX-5, formerly known as the Miata, for still being relevant after all these years. After reinvigorating consumer excitement for convertibles when the Miata first came out in the late 1980s, it continues to be a great little car. Amazingly, Mazda is still able to keep the design current, although I miss the original pop-up headlights. The best improvement is the retractable hardtop. It reduces interior noise and is quick to open and close. The driving experience is so pure in the MX-5 — the handling is balanced and the steering is responsive. Inside, there is decent headroom for adults around 6 feet tall. And the trunk has enough space for luggage for a weekend trip. I love this little convertible! –Joe Chulick

I know that some people who've never driven a MX-5 think it's a "girl's car." Something about being cute and not overpowered, I guess. Well last time I drove a Mazda MX-5, I said, "It was more fun, even in rush-hour traffic, than anything else on the road." I still think that, with one minor change. The MX-5, still better known as the Miata, is more fun than anything else, but especially so in rush-hour traffic. It's more fun in rush hour because it feels faster than it actually is. At 60 mph, the roadster feels as if it is going 70 mph. On slower-speed roads, it feels as if you're slicing through corners with precision and skill. I guess that's good for your driving record, and I know it's good for your sense of fun. It's just a big blast without being scary. And it's far too much fun to be just a girl's car. –Paul Hagger

With the demise of Saturn and Pontiac, the MX-5 is once again the only 2-seat roadster in its class. Mazda has done a wonderful job evolving the MX-5 to be a more useful everyday vehicle without losing the essence of what it was originally: a lightweight, inexpensive, fun-to-drive roadster. The small 2-seater actually has plenty of stowage space in the cabin and a surprisingly large trunk. The retractable hardtop operates quickly and makes the MX-5 a more secure and all-weather car. But the best part about the MX-5 is the way it drives. Steering is quick, and the short shifter feels perfect as you cycle through the gears. Power is more than adequate. Add a satisfying exhaust note and rear-wheel drive and you've got a great driving package. With prices starting around $23K, enthusiasts can get their sports-car fix without breaking the bank. –Perry Stern

Lincoln Town Car Lives On as the MKT

AutoWeek

By Greg Migliore of AutoWeek

Lincoln is not forsaking the world of limos. That means if you're planning a wedding, bachelor party or even a birthday bash that requires a chauffeur, the MKT is in your future.

Lincoln is winding down production of the venerable Town Car this year, and as expected, an MKT will replace it. Interestingly, the familiar name will live on: The limo will be called the MKT Town Car.

It will be available in base and stretch models, with all-wheel drive as an option. The larger version is stretched 10 feet.

Sync, wireless Internet and a backup camera will be among the tech goodies.

Lincoln says the proportions and stance of the MKT will offer better entry and exit capability compared with those of the old Town Car, which was based off a decades-old sedan platform.

Driven: Volkswagen XL1 Concept

Road & Track

By John Lamm of Road & Track

That's right, a sipper car, not a supercar like the VW Group's Lamborghinis or Bugattis that appeared at the 2011 Qatar Auto Show.

It's not unusual for us to find all sorts of experimental vehicles at auto shows, but to drive one just a few days after its launch? Very unusual.

But that's why we were in Doha, Qatar, where VW's slim and aero slick XL1 made its debut. Dr. Ferdinand Piëch — grandson of Ferdinand Porsche and godfather of such legends as Porsche's 917 race car — has set the 1-liter/100-km mileage goal — that's 235 mpg to us — as a corporate quest.

With the XL1 Concept, Volkswagen beats that goal with an astounding fuel consumption figure of only 0.9 liters/100 km, which translates to 261 mpg.

Approaching the Problem from All Fronts
Aero: Super sleek with a CD of 0.186, the XL1 has an overall teardrop shape. The aero detailing is precise, from louvered inlets for radiator air, to a sculpted bellypan, to rear wheel spats to well defined covers on the wheels that hold the super-narrow Michelin low-rolling-resistance tires.

Weight: Or More Precisely The Lack Of It
The heart of the XL1 is a carbon-fiber tub that looks like it came from an upsized, 2-seat Formula 1 car. The same material is used for the body panels, and the weight savings program even went so far as true magnesium wheels and aluminum wiring.

Packaging
VW points out that the XL1 has the length and width of its Polo subcompact, but is only as tall as a Gallardo. Where VW's first stabs at 1-liter/100-km cars placed the passenger behind the driver, this one has them almost side by side...the passenger is situated slightly behind the driver to help trim the car's width. Aft of the cockpit is the engine compartment, while behind that is a 3.5 cu.-ft. trunk.

Drivetrain
This is the most interesting element of the equation. VW matches a 48-horsepower 0.8-liter 2-cylinder diesel (half its 1.6-liter production TDI) to a 20-kW motor, a lithium-ion battery pack and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. The result is a plug-in hybrid that will go 22 miles in electric mode and go as far as 342 miles with the diesel engine. Then you fill up the fuel tank and keep going, a la Chevrolet's Volt. The electric motor both provides motive power and added oomph for the diesel when needed.

Safety
Lightweight doesn't have to mean flimsy, and VW has created a safety cell with the monocoque chassis, to which is added various crush elements. Naturally, the XL1 has such modern safety aids as ABS and ESP stability control.

What's It Like to Drive?
You enter the XL1 through doors that flip up and forward to allow an easy slip into the driver or passenger seat. Two pushes of the power button and the VW doesn't so much start up as light up.

Into drive and off you glide. VW claims a 0-100 lm/h (62 mph) time of 11.9 seconds, but what's important is the feeling the XL1 has sufficient power for you to be comfortable in traffic. It squirts along nicely and you wouldn't be holding up other cars. Need that extra power at low speed? Push down on the pedal and the diesel jumps to life. It isn't subtle, suddenly whipping a high-compression diesel up to operating speed. This changeover to the balance-shaft diesel isn't as noticeable above, say, 35 mph, but it also isn't invisible.

The regenerative ceramic brakes aren't assisted and feel a bit vintage, but that's a comment not a complaint. The ride is what you might expect from a 1753-lb. car on efficient-but-hard tires, not that great a sacrifice for the mileage you're achieving.

Fuel efficiency is the overriding concern when driving the XL1. It's easy to find little faults with it compared to even a small cheap car, but what do you expect? This is a prototype, just one step along the way to future production.

When? VW isn't even guessing, but the XL1 is a commendable next move.

Toyota Targets Conventional Engine

AutoWeek

By Hans Greimel of AutoWeek

Toyota's Koei Saga says fine-tuning gasoline engines is vital to maximizing the mileage of its hybrids, such as the Prius.

In the race to boost fuel economy, overhauling the internal combustion engine is all the rage. Ford, Hyundai and Mazda are among those focusing on direct injection, turbochargers and improved transmissions as they reinvent their powertrain lineups.

So with its emphasis on hybrids, Toyota Motor Corp. may be missing the boat.

For all its r&d firepower, Toyota has been slow to popularize such technologies as direct injection and six-speed automatic transmissions. And it hasn't turned at all to turbochargers or dual-clutch transmissions, which rivals increasingly see as key ingredients in greening their fleets.

Now, with Toyota struggling to defend its image as an environmental leader, simply playing the hybrid card may not be enough. And in recognition of this, Toyota is aiming to bring direct injection, turbocharging and engine cylinder deactivation to a wider array of small cars.

"We know we can't rely solely on hybrid technology to meet all consumer needs in the future," Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. President Jim Lentz said at last week's National Automobile Dealers Association convention.

Read:  Toyota Goes Even 'Greener'

Hybrids Hold Sway
Takeshi Uchiyamada, executive vice president for r&d, said that in the next five years, turbochargers and direct injection will go in more pedestrian models such as the Toyota Camry.

Other tweaks will include expanded use of start-stop technology, which saves fuel by turning off the engine when the car comes to a standstill, and advances in variable valve systems.

"From the outside, Toyota might seem somewhat behind," said Koei Saga, managing director in charge of drivetrain r&d at Toyota. "But though it's not widely publicized, we do have plans to improve those technologies."

Saga said fine-tuning Toyota's gasoline engines is key to maximizing mileage in its hybrids as well.

"When you think of fuel efficiency, the engine is the base for improvement," he said.

Saga noted that the Prius engine is among Toyota's most advanced.

It uses an electric water pump, a new exhaust gas recirculation system, which reduces emissions by pumping exhaust back into the engine intake, and an exhaust heat recirculation system to warm the engine during cold starts and improve efficiency.

Still, hybrids hold sway in Toyota's laboratories.

If You Got It, Flaunt It
In his speech at the NADA convention, Lentz gave only cursory mention to refining the internal combustion engine. The focus was on hybrids, plug-in hybrids, electric cars and advanced batteries.

One reason for the emphasis is that Toyota has sunk a considerable amount of its war chest into hybrids. Eyeing annual hybrid sales of 1 million units as early as 2015, Toyota engineers say it is time to start reaping some of the cost reductions that come with mass scale.

Toyota aims to halve the cost of the hybrid powertrain in the next-generation Prius, Saga said.

It is little wonder Toyota executives enthuse about sexy technologies such as hybrids and advanced batteries, not such humdrum matters as variable valve lift. If you got it, flaunt it.

Toyota plans to bring out lithium ion batteries soon and is working on next-generation solid-state and metal-air batteries that could double lithium ion's performance.

Read:  Electric Car Batteries: Five Concerns

But such advances, for all their promise, won't be here until 2030, Uchiyamada conceded.

Until then, Toyota will need to take a closer look at its basic engine strategy if it wants to fend off the pack of increasingly aggressive rivals trying to usurp its green car crown.

G power tunes BMW M6 Hurricane

BMW M6 HurricaneG power goes to mood will up the M6 hurricane by it a 5.0 liter v10 engine - which is similar, they gave the M5 hurricane. Of course there are a few things that are different.

Car twin blower established the only 6 PSI for a lower increase-, when compared with the 10 psi of the M5. Can still produce a good 635 HP @ 7300 rpm and 469 pound foot torque. This gives the car to go the ability of 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 200 km/h.

Not to forget questions, G-power one this phenomenon offers a new front and rear fascia, rocker panels and carbon fiber rear diffuser with 21-inch wheels, the space for a 15-inch brake system front. M6 owners can drop off your car at the G-power Germany headquarters or a fully assembled car from a mere 183,000 Euro order.

Penske Drops Smart Distribution

AutoWeek

By Diana T. Kurylko of AutoWeek

Mercedes-Benz brings the smart into its fold in the United States to help with corporate average fuel economy.

Mercedes-Benz has agreed to take over smart car distribution in the United States from Penske Automotive Group, the companies said Monday. Penske launched the European microcar brand, which is owned by Mercedes' parent, Daimler AG, as an independent distributor in 2008. But after a fast start, U.S. sales of the tiny, French-built fortwo have plummeted.

Distribution rights and management will shift to Mercedes-Benz USA. Negotiations over details, including when the hand-over takes effect, should be completed by July, said Mercedes-Benz USA CEO Ernst Lieb.

The 21 smart dealerships that do not have Mercedes products will lose the franchise, leaving smart with 58 U.S. dealers. Four of the 21 dealerships that will lose the smart franchise belong to publicly traded Penske Automotive.

In addition, a four-door car being developed by Nissan for smart USA has been canceled.

Smart USA President Jill Lajdziak will remain with Penske Automotive, the nation's second-largest auto retailer. Mercedes-Benz will run smart as a division, similar to its Sprinter commercial vehicle unit, and will appoint a general manager, Lieb said.

Read Blog:  Mercedes Gets Small

Fuel Economy a Key
Lieb said an agreement was signed Friday, but financial details have not been hammered out. Mercedes initiated the discussions with Penske in early January at the Detroit Auto Show, he said.

Penske got off to a roaring start with Smart, selling 24,622 cars in 2008, as gasoline prices reached record highs. But sales have tumbled in the past two years — falling 59 percent in 2010 to 5,927. But both parties said smart's shrinking sales are not prompting the hand-over.

Lieb said Mercedes-Benz wants Smart back for two main reasons:

1. It needs the small-car volume to meet new corporate average fuel economy standards that take effect in the United States in the 2016 model year.

2. Daimler AG integrated smart into the Mercedes-Benz car unit September. The U.S. is the only market where smart and Mercedes operate separately.

“It has become clear over the last few months that smart is an integral part of our achieving the fuel economy targets of 2016,” Lieb said.

Penske Automotive will handle termination of the 17 non-Mercedes-Benz dealers as part of the deal.

Penske Automotive CEO Roger Penske said the closings will include the buyback of signs, equipment and cars — in accordance with the franchise agreement.

Mercedes-Benz could give smart franchises to other Mercedes-Benz dealers, but Lieb said they would not be required to build stand-alone facilities.

“In most cases a shop-in-shop has proven to be the most economical,” he said. “If you are selling one or two cars, you need consistency in personnel and expenses. It will not work if you have a stand-alone facility.”

Lieb said 300 of Mercedes-Benz' 353 U.S. dealers have upgraded their showrooms to the Autohaus corporate facility program.

“This will be a lot easier than it would have been three years ago,” he said. “The facilities are completely different.”

Project Quattro Canceled
Smart dealers in the United States sell the fortwo and an electric version of the microcar. The brand isn't scheduled to receive a new vehicle for two or three years. That will be a four-door being developed with Renault/Nissan as part of an alliance with Mercedes-Benz.

A separate Nissan-based four-door that has been under development for Smart USA won't happen. That car was due to be launched in late 2011 or early 2012.

“We will stop the project,” Lieb said. “If Smart continued as a free-standing network, they would need a second model to make it viable. By integrating it into Mercedes-Benz, there is no need.”

The Mexican-built car, which had been dubbed Project Quattro, could be canceled at any time according to the agreement with Nissan.

Roger Penske said Mercedes-Benz has the marketing muscle that Smart needs.

Compare: smart fortwo vs. Ford Fiesta vs. Honda Fit

“We have launched a brand we can hand off to MB-USA,” he said. “We couldn't give it the muscle that it needed from a marketing standpoint based on the volume.

“This is not a shutdown,” Penske added. “This is nothing compared to a Hummer or a Mercury, this is changing distributorship from a private distributor.”

Lieb said Mercedes-Benz views the buyback as “an opportunity with 353 dealers to drive smart in a different direction.”

He said Mercedes will interview smart's 20-plus employees to fill field and technical posts.

Michael Cantanucci, owner of New Country Motor Cars Inc., which has two Mercedes stores in Florida and one in Connecticut, said combining smart and Mercedes makes sense because of the CAFE requirements.

He said: “The penalties going forward are just too expensive and this is a logical way for us to meet the objective.”

2011 Kia Sportage — Flash Drive

I think the Kia Sportage is one of the best-looking compact sport utes on the market. It has great lines and looks quite different than the plethora of small SUVs on the road today. Its interior is top-notch, too. I was impressed by the quality of materials and the fit and finish. The controls on the central console and dashboard are easy to use and functional - there was definitely a lot of planning around the ergonomics. On the road, the Sportage is smooth and maneuverable around town, and the peppy 4-cylinder engine has plenty of power when you need the extra get-up-and-go. Unfortunately, I was rear-ended during the beginning of my test drive by a person who was checking a cell phone. There was a good amount of damage, but I was safe and secure inside. A couple of years ago, I would have never imagined liking a Kia. Now, I encourage anyone to consider a Kia. –Joe Chulick

The 2011 Kia Sportage is a really nice-looking compact SUV with a sporty, bold design. The EX model we tested hits the $30,000 mark, but it included features such as heated and cooled leather seats, a huge panoramic sunroof, and a navigation system with back-up camera. The 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine delivers 176 horsepower through a 6-speed automatic transmission. It provided decent acceleration and good overall drivability, although the throttle tip-in is a little abrupt. On the road, the stiff platform and suspension tuning give the Sportage a crisp and controlled feel without being overly harsh. Steering had an odd resistance, though, making it easy to give too much steering input. A sports car this isn't. Bottom line, the Sportage is efficient and practical, yet it delivers a lot of style and value for the dollar. –Mike Meredith

The all-new Kia Sportage is an amazing improvement over the outgoing model. At first glance, it really stands out from the crowd. Closer examination reveals an impressive interior with nice materials, well-laid-out controls and a surprising amount of storage space. For most uses, the cargo space is more than adequate, and the rear seats fold down easily to fit more gear. The ride is comfortable, although a bit jarring on rough roads, and there were no complaints from my tall rear-seat passenger. The Sportage is no hot rod, but the 176 horsepower is enough to get it moving quickly. I expected better fuel economy, though. Even so, I was able to achieve 23 mpg in mostly city driving. With prices starting at less than $20K - fully loaded at less than $30K — the Sportage should definitely be on your list of small crossovers to consider. –Perry Stern
